CNN is basically saying they know who it is but that they can't report it just yet.

Going back to the possibility of NY charges, is there any reason why NY prosecutors would hold back / are holding back from charging these people in NY? If this is the backup plan, why wait until Mueller is fired?

I think courts might object to charging someone twice for the same thing.

Double jeopardy actually doesn't bar prosecution by two separate sovereigns. You're totally fine charging somebody for the same acts in both federal and state court.

In practice though, the federal and state prosecutors normally coordinate to decide who should get the first bite at the apple. Why file two cases simultaneously when you could wait and see how the first case goes and learn from it?

It would be really interesting to be a fly on the wall in the White House today.

Remember those stories about how jubilant Trump was about the possibility that the Mueller investigation might be wrapped up by year’s end? Lol.

Im 90% positive there is no Rep. Will Bailey.  Will Bailey was a West Wing character, and the picture from the quoted twitter account is of that character.

Edit: Also, the Congressmen who represents Oregon's 4th congressional district is Peter DeFazio.

Alright, I’ll admit, I fell for it.

How the hell have Trump’s people not figured out yet that in the world of politics cease and desist letters are literally the opposite of effective.

Trump has done dozens of depositions, and never gotten snagged in them.

I’m not disputing the fact that Trump has been deposed in many lawsuits. I’m disputing your unsubstantiated assertion that he’s somehow a pro at it.

The possibility of what many of us considered the most unlikely event in America as late as last year, a military coup, is becoming significant.

Hypothetically if Trump or any sitting President were to be indicted, what would the protocol be for the FBI? Would they bust in the White House at 5 am to do a pre dawn arrest? Would they arrange for the president to surrender himself to the FBI to avoid humiliation? Or maybe they would do a raid when the President was on vacation and far away from the white house.

I’m pretty sure that whenever governors get indicted they usually get to arrange a time to surrender and be booked in at the police station. I imagine it would be pretty similar for the president. Presumably the secret service would demand to accompany him every step of the way and would want to guard his jail cell while he waits to bond out.

A charge of "conspiracy against the United States" is about as bad as a federal charge not involving murder could be.  It is close to treason, a word that people in the legal system use most cautiously if at all. I have a feeling that someone far more important could be the target.

Actually, not to downplay the seriousness of what’s alleged, but “conspiracy against the United States” is a very common charge that federal prosecutors apply to a wide variety of white collar crimes where the U.S. government can be alleged as one of the victims of any form of fraud. It carries a max sentence of 5 years which, while nothing to sneeze at, is actually the least serious charge Manafort is facing. It’s the money laundering charges that could potentially get him decades in prison. So no, it’s not really comparable to treason or murder or even the average federal drug offense.
