I don't think it was "controversial" as much as it was insightful. What you had was a conservative commentator expressing a knee-jerk reaction of outrage at the mere concept of a black Santa Claus without actually stopping to think through why that should even bother them, and then  proceeding to spout nonsense in an increasingly flustered manner when pressed to articulate a rational defense of their position. It was a nice condensed example of the thought process underlying faux conservative outrages over wholly manufactured controversies.

Faux outrage  is growing increasingly irrational on the left right.  Every word that comes out of someones mouth now that isn't is PC is considered some secret systemic reverse-racism against white people or something.
 

Example: feigning outrage over the mention of a black Santa Claus.
