Watched Punch Drunk Love and Inglorious Basterds tonight (seen both before). Both are pretty good.

I thought you hated really violent movies and considered them fascist. Huh

I doubt that you thought.

Living in the real world I analyze things in shades so I don't necessarily fall into your narrow-minded worldviews.

Oh! Watched that one in cinemas when it came out here (two years ago, maybe?). I remember me and my friend laughed so hard we were hushed by someone.

'I have a weakness for ice cream'

Cheesy

I think that line might have been what prompted the hushing, actually.

Wow, forgot about this thread.

Well, I finally caught Ides of March recently. Decent but nothing amazing.

Watched that two nights ago as well. Meh. It never really did anything unexpected and lacked real tension. I also thought the material was a bit too predictable and close to the real world (i.e. intern-fcking and White Obama).

Drive was much better, if we are talking about recent Gosling vehicles.

Some friends watched that this weekend, but I was in Finland and couldn't join. They didn't like it though.

Oh, last night I watched Purple Rose of Cairo at home. Woody is a cynical old bastard, but it was an entertaining movie all the same.

I've watched some more stuff. Don't feel like listing everything here but has anyone else watched The Visitors (1972)? I can't say I liked the movie but it was interesting and rather disturbing. Fairly revolutionary filmmaking for that time too, no doubt. I'm kind of surprised it doesn't have more of a reputation.

Looking at the wikipedia page it somewhat randomly reminded me of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.

I watched that recently too. I had seen it at the cinema and was pleasantly suprised by how hot Gaspard Ulliel is many of the short films I'd forgotten about.

Seriously? I'm a tad disappointed in your taste there, I must say. Wink But he was the gay guy of the movie I suppose.

Saw New Year's Eve in the cinema, sadly enough. The things one does for women.

Also saw The Fearless Vampire Killers by Polanski on DVD. Pretty weird. And, re-watched Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine at home.

Ouch, bro.

Yup. It was made up to me though. And I made clear it wouldn't be repeated. Wink

Bridge Over The River Kwai. Rewatched it with half an eye while studying to keep my flatmate company (he was watching it for the first time). Jolly good.

Riff-Raff. Very good, manages to very, very narrowly avoid being too preachy. I preferred the lighter, more person-oriented (more bourgeois I suppose Tongue ) style of Looking for Eric though.

Guess I want to be more able to ignore the plight of the working man.

Can't stand Loach, for the most part. I will make an exception for Kes.

Haha, somehow I could almost guess. Why not? Is it overdoing it?

The Singing Detective. BBC mini series, that is.

Al - yes, that's certainly accurate as far as some of them go (Sweet Sixteen anyone?) And the issue is probably there, in the background, as a running theme, throughout. But where is Looking for Eric (and it does have issues) "humorless" - or entirely devoid of the things that make life bearable? Huh

Copycat. Tongue

Al, your critique sounds very much like what my dad usually says about working class depictions. I think I agree with you on that, basically. Keep in mind, I've only seen Looking for Eric and Riff Raff so our bases for judging Loach have very little overlap. Wink

Incidentally, I'm also watching The Singing Detective, only seen first episode so far though.

A Serious Man.  We watched it yesterday.  Anyone see that?  I felt that it lacked denouement.  The characters were well developed, but the story was incomplete.

I've seen it. While I see your point I still loved the movie for the ride it gave.

Finally got around to seeing The Tree of Life. Outstanding. Admittedly it is the sort of thing that I'll always like and I can see why others might have a lower opinion and all that, but, meh. Oddly enough the best thing about it wasn't any of the obvious things, but the general feeling of sincerity, something that isn't as common culturally as it once was.

Good to see someone else liked it. It seems to be a love/hate type of movie.

I finally saw Midnight in Paris.  It's my favorite movie of 2011 hands down.

A good movie for Naso, but he probably wouldn't get why.

Also saw that recently. Ironically enough while influenced. Not the best choice for that but I still liked it.

In case I forgot to mention it here I also saw Iron Lady recently. That was pretty much crap though.

I accept the narrative was clumsy and innacurate ,and missed out a lot of the undramatic but important things, I  thought the acting was outstanding. Meryl Deserves the Oscar IMO.

Oh, right. I agree the acting was good (though I haven't seen enough or followed the race to comment on the Oscars). It's a good example of how good acting can't really save a badly directed bad script though.

Boogie Nights

Not as good as I expected, especially from P.T. Anderson.

Re-watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest when it turned out my flatmate hadn't seen it. Still a brilliant movie.

Also, it will please Al to hear that I finished The Singing Detective. Really cool series - I loved it.

I be glad to hear thou didst like it, old butt.

Well, I was glad for the subtitles when they did the childhood bits. Wink

His ranting in the ward were rather brilliant and there were a lot of splendid side characters. The guy who kept trying to talk to Reginald for example, did a great job of being very unpleasant without the reason for that being all that obvious.

Did they translate them in the same way as the rest of it?

Mr Hall is hilarious and (regrettably) so true.

Yes, they did. Like many Nordic DVDs this one sadly lacked English subtitles, and they didn't bother with a Swedish adaptation in the written subtitles. Wink

And Mr. Hall did feel like someone one has tried hard to forgot having met. Tongue

I'm no pro-heterosezual, but the idea of LGBT movies just sound like a bad time.

I was going to say the same, but I was afraid of being labelled an anti-pro-homosexual.
