Today's sermon was about how material things can never fully satisfy you and how true happiness will require following Jesus' command to love others. And since I agree I will have to abstain from comment.

Thank you, that might be the nicest thing anyone has ever said about me.

Judging by the poll it would seem that my hard work on alienating people is finally beginning to pay off. I had to vote FF myself to put me ahead.

(in all seriousness I appreciate Marokai's respect, even if it means an HP vote at the end of day. Man wants to be loved, but respect is a decent second best!)

A weird case. He's most of the time a pretty reasonable guy with sound political views, but as soon as he discusses some particular topics he suddenly turns into a stubborn, strawmanning hack.

I translate this as you like people when they agree with you but find them abhorrent when they don't. Tongue

I'm a bit particular when it comes to valid argumentation and I think people who have had no training in logic or argumentation sometimes gets a bit thrown off by that. I've also realized that I'm taken seriously quite often when I'm not.

Speaking of political opinions, one of my flatmates wants to throw a party where the theme is offensiveness. I'd be happy to take suggestions on the issue (this was inspired by a particular party-killing conversation we had this weekend in Riga, so child porn and Hitler will likely be included).

BRTD: you seem to confuse disliking a lifestyle choice (like wearing sneakers and lipstick together) with being an evil person. I see no reason to show any respect to someone who has no moral value. You seem to be making the mistake of thinking this has to do with religious morality or prudishness or something like that which it really isn't.

Also, thanks for the nice comments guys. They're appreciated.

Finally, I'd like to note that I did nothing to invite either Opebo or BRTD to spew their tired rants in this thread. So don't blame me when this degenerates into BRTD trying to understand things that he can't.

He endlessly attempts to defend what he sees as obvious.  This often includes refuting the opinions of those who he views as repugnant in only the most arrogant fashion.  In short, he is the quintessential forumite; he only earns so much vitriol because of his undiplomatic approach to disputes, something that we can attribute to many of the best posters.

That's probably the nicest thing you ever said to me.

I'm only arrogant to people who I feel deserve it. I try to avoid being arrogant to people who are just genuinely stupid.

An extremely dangerous individual who must be dealt with at some point.

I heard he is a coprophiliac who likes to get sex and then stiff the girl.

That is a vile lie. I always take care to kill them first. I feel that is the gentleman way to go about it.

Here's what I said earlier:

I have to say that Gustaf constantly strikes me as someone in believes in what might be called "The adjustment to Pangloss doctrine" that is to say that this world might not be the best of all possible, but it is most reasonable. I, of course, believe the contrary.

While I think this still contains some validity, I now believe that this description really more applies to Beet. However, Gustaf "serious, sensible" person is more applied and honest than Beet's mental gymnastics to show how the neocons were right all along and that he is a serious person. I like Gustaf quite a bit though. But he needs to lay off Opebo, for his own good really.

I have pretty much laid off Opebo, I'd say. He follows me around more than the other way around.

I still don't really understand what this description is supposed to mean and I'm still a bit curious about it, so feel free to elaborate. It amuses me that anyone would consider me a serious, sensible person though.

Oh, and thanks for the qualified praise I've gotten from most of you. Tongue Special thanks to Belgian for the recommendation.

Glad to hear it. The alternative would not, I think, be acceptable conduct for a moderator because (as you rightly say) it would be ungentlemanly.

I do my best to honour the office. I think for a regular poster any random ordering would be just fine.

Jag tänker att vi behöver flera Svenskar (eller man från Norden, preferably kvinnor).

Think in the way you want to use it here is "tycker" rather than "tänker" since the latter refers exclusively to using your brain and not giving an opinion.

The bracketed part makes less sense. It seems to be saying "or man from Scandinavia, preferably women" which seems somewhat contradictory. Tongue

Maybe you mean people from Scandinavia in which case you could replace "man" with "personer" or something like that.

One of my favorite posters, but I shouldn't play board games with him.

Many have come to that painful realization. Wink
