Some have said its very unlikely that John Edwards could even win his home state being so liberal.

I wouldn't say that John Edwards is 'so liberal'. It's true that he probably wouldn't win his home state, but he wouldn't necessarily have to.

What would be the point of having him on the ticket to sway the south if he couldnt even sway his home state to him.

The point isn't really to sway the South, it's to sway moderate Republicans and independents who have voted for him in large numbers in primaries all over the country.

If I remembr correctly he lost his senate seat, so he might not add a lot to the ticket.
