As for the so called "deeper issues"-I've been pretty open about the fact that I admire the darker aspects of Richard Nixon, because I am honest with myself about my own darker aspects. I learned to accept this from (of all people) Howard Stern.
Coming to terms with evil based on the knowledge that we all have some within ourselves and outright admiring it are very different things.
You're not wrong at all on this, though I feel people apply the term evil not to Nixon's actions but to his ambition. I admire his absolute dedication to claiming the Presidency-I admire Hillary Clinton for that as well. What I don't admire is Nixon's methods to get there, like breaking into the Watergate and purposely extending the Vietnam War.
But you can't separate the two. If Nixon had not been willing to extend the Vietnam War he would not have had an absolute dedication to becoming presidency. He'd have other things instead, like a conscience, but he wouldn't have that ambition. Trying to separate his actions, which were motivated purely by his ambition and the ambition itself is impossible.
Not really related to that, but it's pretty disturbing that you admire sociopathic lust for power.
