While this never should have been politicized by Rep. Wilson, I will say that Gen. Kelly is out of touch here.  The "he knew what he signed up for" comment worked for him when his son died because both he and his son were career military.  Sgt. Johnson's widow wasn't, nor was the woman who raised him.

Not only that, but it seems painfully obvious that Trump hastily arranged to make calls because of his inaccurate swipe at both Obama and Dubya earlier that day, so the draft evader's reason for making those calls appears to have been pure politics and nothing but politics.

I genuinely don't see anything wrong with saying he knew what he signed up for. As multiple people have pointed out, the statement highlights the bravery of this and every fallen soldier.
It's a cold comfort that will be better appreciated by those with a military background.  Also, it's ludicrous when offered by a draft dodger like Trump who did his best to avoid signing up to begin with.
