1944 was the last time South Carolina was solidly Democratic.  (In 1936, every single county was 90% or more Democratic!)

1972 was the last time SC was solidly Republican, and that was despite (or perhaps because) the Democratic and United Citizen Parties running a fusion ticket for McGovern/Shriver)
