Even then, it also depends on where the epicenter was and how deep it occurred with respect to death counts.

Initial reports indicate it was shallow quake, a little less than 10 miles deep, which is bad.

The death toll may have been reduced because it was a weekend and in the middle of day - so less people were trapped in homes or schools.


Yeah I heard on the radio of one village that has been completely leveled but because everyone was out in the fields to plant potatoes there were no casualties.
