John Brown wasn't crazy, he just wasn't thinking like normal people would.  He certainly would have been pleased by the Civil War.  An interesting what-if, is what-if there had been no John Brown?  Mr. Brown was not responsible for the Republican victory in 1860, but the feeling he engendered ensured that the South went out.  History would have been a lot calmer than it was in real life.  Better? That depends on your point of view.
