Round V:

A Reminder this round will move the game to December.

All Eyes on Edwards and Clinton

Coming off a strong debate performance and receiving a number of endorsements John Edwards looks to be the man to beat in the Iowa Caucuses. The Former North Carolina Senator is currently leading in the state and continues to build support in some of the early primary states including South Carolina and Missouri. Hillary Clinton remains a factor in the race receiving some big name endorsements from Tom Vislack along with newspapers including the NH Union Leader and Ames Tribune. Clinton, who campaign was questioned rebounded after stellar debate performance.

Al Gore's focus is concentrated on Iowa, where he hopes to upset the frontrunner John Edwards. Pundits says that a win for Gore in Iowa will reshape the race and put him in a head-to-head match with Clinton going into New Hampshire and beyond.

Senator Joe Biden continues to be a strong contender for the nomination, with most pundits saying his best shot to change the dynamics of the race would be a win in either Iowa or New Hampshire.

Rudy, Bill and George

Rudy Giuliani is still the frontrunner for the Republican nomination, but he faces competition from Colorado Governor Bill Owens and Virginia Senator George Allen. Both Owens and Allen are vying for the conservative vote in the primary. Owens has walked a fine line with trying to appeal to the base and reaching out to moderate and establishment Republicans. Allen is making the strong case that he is the true conservative in the race, and the real test for the two will be in Iowa.

Donald Rumsfeld continues to focus on early primary states such as New Hampshire and Delaware and is trying to position himself as a successor to Giuliani should his campaign stumble. His foreign policy experience separates him from the rest of the field and is the main focus of his campaign, which could play well with many in the GOP electorate.

Pat Buchanan and Gary Johnson are still factors in the race. Both candidates are playing up their outsider appeal, which is resonating with some in the GOP. Johnson continuously polls strong in the state of Iowa is considered a dark horse.

Round VI

Another week of the 2004 Presidential campaign and both sides are gearing up and bringing their A game as they enter the final leg of the contest before the first contest in Iowa next month. On the Republican side Pat Buchanan ended his bid for President, but backed Senator George Allen, who continues to champion himself as the conservative candidate, while Governor Bill Owens continues to position himself as the candidate who can unite all wings of the Republican Party. Both Rudy Giuliani and Donald Rumsfeld continue to be on the upward swing, with both candidates wracking up endorsements and claiming to have building momentum. Gary Johnson continues to do well in his push for the nomination. His focus on Iowa and New Hampshire's contests may benefit him in the end.

Rudy Giuliani's lead for the nomination has slipped slightly, but he still leads the pack. Buchanan's exit and endorsement of Allen may boost the Virginia Senator's chances.

In the race for the Democratic nomination it continues to be a fight between Senators Clinton and Edwards, with Gore and Biden taking shots for third place. Dennis Kucinich continues to focus on building his case and getting his name out to the electorate in the bigger states and is running an ad seen across the country.

Polls continue to give a slight edge to the Republicans, when comes to the general election, but both Clinton and Edwards find themselves within spitting distance of their top Republican rivals: Giuliani, Rumsfeld and Owens. Clinton is now in a dead heat with Edwards for the Democratic nomination.

In the state of Iowa it is a dead heat between George Allen and Bill Owens. A surprise in third place, Gary Johnson continuing to do well in Iowa. While on the Democratic side Edwards continues to build on his lead, making a victory at this point look almost inevitable. In New Hampshire, Giuliani leads, but is has shrunk. Rumsfeld continues to make a strong push in the Granite State, along with Gary Johnson. Still, with a large percentage undecided, it's anyone's game in the primary for the Republicans.
On the Democratic side Hillary Clinton is still for the moment the one to beat in New Hampshire.

Endorsements

Gov. Mark Warner
As Governor of this great state, I don’t make an endorsement lightly. But it’s great to see another candidate, the first in his family to graduate and who worked his way through college, a self-made man, running for President. It’s also good to have another moderate Democrat campaigning on improving children’s education and reforming our schools. He’s simply the best in the field, and he’s got my vote.

Sorry, I've taken Warner as Biden.
I apologize for creating the misconception. I erred and forgot about Warner being taken.

Breaking: Edwards Hospitalized

Senator John Edwards, until now a strong insurgent candidate threatening to become the Democratic frontrunner for the nomination, has been taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. On the eve of a crucial debate in New Hampshire, Edwards had finished an appearance in Iowa City (where he appeared normal, if a bit pale) and was heading to the Des Moines airport when he complained of chest pain, dizziness, and shortness of breath. Cardiologists at the hospital refused requests for interviews, but the campaign released a statement claiming that it involved a non-life-threatening heart condition, but one that requires treatment by cardiologists and means he should avoid travel. The Senator will undergo treatment immediately. The telegenic candidate is expected to return to the trail within a few weeks, though whether he'll still have a shot at the nomination remains to be seen. A campaign spokesperson confirmed that the candidate intended to return to the trail once his medical issue was resolved.

OOC: I'll be out of town until next week.

That's fine.

Round VIII: JANUARY 11-January 14
FINAL FOUR DAYS BEFORE IOWA

Breaking news on the campaign trail. Former Senator John Edwards was hospitalized after complaining of chest pains, dizziness and shortness of breath. His condition is non-life threatening, but Edwards' campaign reported he will be off the campaign trail for a few weeks. How this will affect the upcoming Iowa Caucuses on January 14th, remains to be seen. Edwards was and still is the leading contender for first.

The final four days of the Presidential primary contest, before the Iowa Caucuses. All sides are polling out all stops ahead of the all important caucus state. Mayor Giuliani has been to the state, but seems to be looking else, a smart move as his campaign apparatus lies in the big states down the line.

Donald Rumsfeld is making a competitive play in the state of Iowa, a move not many expected. He playing in the big cities and high turnout area, hoping to run up the numbers. We'll see how it works out for him.

George Allen looks to be the man to beat in the state of Iowa. He is drumming up conservative support. He is targeting every county in Iowa and so far has held onto his lead in the polls.

Gary Johnson is a dark horse in the race. He has been paying special care to the caucuses and some pundits believe he could pull a few surprises on caucus night.

Bill Owens, the once favorite for Iowa is dropping in the polls, as it appears his campaign is stalled. Having missed a crucial debate in New Hampshire and been lax on the campaign trail, many pundits believe this once rising star is fizzling out. Whether he can pull it together in final days before the caucuses remains to be seen. Pundits agree, he'll need to refocus his campaign if he wants a shot at winning the caucuses.

On the Democratic side, with John Edwards sidelined for the moment, there is an opening for one of the remaining candidates to pull an upset in Iowa. Clinton and Biden have been focusing on the state, but with the latter doing more so than the former. Clinton continues to focus on New Hampshire, where she leads her nearest rival, Edwards by six to seven points. Dennis Kucinich continues to be a factor in the race. Coupled by some big endorsements and strong debate performance, he maybe the dark horse in Iowa.

In terms of national polling, all polls were conducted before Edwards' hospitalization and he was tied with Clinton for first and leading in Iowa. In the wake of his hospitalization, he holds onto a lead in Iowa, though his numbers have shrunk.

May I post as a surrogate for Edwards during this last week before Iowa? Just give me one of his surrogates and I can play with him!
Absolutely.
Gore, Gephardt, Bob Graham are possibilities.

Bill Owens: 9,099 (7.67%)
Other: 751 (0.3%)

BREAKING NEWS: George Allen Wins The Iowa Caucuses

George Allen wins the Iowa Caucuses, though a surprise and frankly strong second place finish by Donald Rumsfeld has shaken up what was largely an expected win for Allen. Most polls showed him leading by a considerable margin, but the Former Defense Secretary's ground game clearly paid off. A third place finish for Johnson, gives his campaign momentum heading in New Hampshire. Rudy Giuliani, did not heavily contests the Caucuses, and looks to New Hampshire and beyond. Bill Owens, the once favorite in Iowa finished in last place with just over 7 percent of the vote. With a loss in the caucuses it is difficult to see where his campaign goes from here.

Iowa Caucuses: Democrats
√ John Edwards: 571 (31.80%) (16)
Hillary Clinton: 549 (30.60%) (16)
Dennis Kucinich: 342 (19.03%) (13)
Joe Biden: 255 (14.20%)
Other: 80 (4.37%)

BREAKING NEWS: John Edwards Wins Iowa Caucuses

John Edwards, who is still recuperating in the hospital won the Iowa Caucuses, but by a narrower margin than what was predicted. Former President Bill Clinton, while on the trail stumping for Hillary said that he believed Edwards would still win the Iowa caucuses, but by a smaller margin, and right he was. He won the caucuses by 1.2 percent.
Dennis Kucinich finished a strong third and walked away with some delegates, while Joe Biden won a respectable amount and now looks to New Hampshire and beyond.

BREAKING NEWS: RUDY GIULIANI WINS NH PRIMARY

Rudy Giuliani won the all important New Hampshire Primary, but faced tough competition from Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who like he had in Iowa finished a strong second. The primary was not called for Giuliani until after midnight and his margin of victory was 1.27 percent. Still, a win for Giuliani sets him up for a strong performance on the February 3rd contests; the mini Super Tuesday.

A second strong performance by Donald Rumsfeld, makes him a serious contender in the upcoming contests and beyond. Gary Johnson again finished with a strong performance and won some delegates from the primary. He too heads up into the next contests in a great position. George Allen, winner of the Iowa Caucuses finished fourth on Tuesday, but did pickup one delegate finished better than expected. Donald Rumsfeld takes a small lead in the delegate count at this time, with Allen, Giuliani and Johnson in succeeding order.

Current national polls show a three-way tie between Giuliani, Rumsfeld and Allen, putting all the more emphasis on the February 3rd contests.

Democrats:
√ Hillary Clinton: 62,561 (34.42%) (11)
Joe Biden: 48,006 (26.41%) (7)
Dennis Kucinich: 38,314 (21.08%) (4)
John Edwards: 32,487 (17.87%) (1)
Other: 349 (0.22%)

BREAKING NEWS: HILLARY CLINTON WINS NH PRIMARY

As expected Hillary Clinton easily won the New Hampshire primary over her Democratic rivals and heads into the February 3rd contests with her frontrunner status in tact. Joe Biden, however finished second in the New Hampshire, something unexpected by the pundits, but many attributed Biden's success to doubling down in the Granite State after Iowa and focusing on town halls and meeting blue collar voters. Dennis Kucinich finished a strong third and picked up some delegates. A one third tier, Kucinich is now being more seriously, especially now heading into the next contests. John Edwards, who is still recovering finished fourth in the primary, but most pundits believe his campaign is not over, as he still polls strong in the national polls and holds onto a delegate count.

National polls still put Clinton in the lead, with Edwards dropping in the wake of his hospitalization. Both Biden and Kucinich have seen their numbers improve.

*After this round closes, instead of doing proportional delegates it will be winner takes all; as it is easier for calculation.
