On an unrelated note, a Jewish center in Belgium was attacked, with three people shot dead. It's a pretty dark day everywhere it seems.

As a person with an autistic brother, I of course do not believe in a correlation. But Spiral is not off base in noting that it probably did not help with an already toxic combination of mental problems. My own brother once put a teacher in a neck brace during a violent temper tantrum when he was in the fourth grade; he was diagnosed as bipolar at one point, and after a particularly nasty two week long meltdown that ended with him being baker acted and evaluated by the state, it was proven that the diagnosis was incorrect. So while autism or aspergers doesn’t make a person in anyway violent by themselves, it certainly doesn’t make them incapable of violence.

I agree with Spiral that his aspergers might have contributed to low self esteem and other mental problems lead him down to a path of violent misogyny that ended up with what happened last night.

Why people continue to spread the lie than the it was a sexually frustated guy. No, it isn't.

It's a male supremacist. The male equilavent of Ku Klux Klan. It's an hate crime against all women and another failure of the NSA and friends to tackle real criminals and hateful websites.

The extreme mascululinist movement is dangerous and must be repressed by the full weight of the state.
I have news for you: most douchebags are not mentally imbalanced killers.

This hits a nerve with me. When I was 22, I too drove a BMW and had well-to-do parents and was surrounded by attractive, popular people who by and large pretended I wasn't there. It's frustrating and it makes you a very angry, bitter person.

I never went out and shot a bunch of people (the only person I've ever considered killing is myself). But, yeah, harboring a simultaneous longing for and visceral hatred of the chipper blonde sorority girls who never gave me the time of day; been there, done that. And I still don't understand what it is that I do wrong.

There's no excuse for what Elliot Rodger did, but I do know what he must have felt like.
I don't feel ignored by girls as much as by society at large, but yeah, I can agree with you 100% that I have had similar emotions. Thank God you and I sane. The mental health crisis in this country is always ignored because it is much easier to attack/defend gun rights in the aftermath, sadly. I am glad to see this thread is more dedicated to the subject of why he did it than how he did it.

Reading the gunman's manifesto, it appears that he was friends with Paul Humphrey's daughter. Rather bizzare so far, but very interesting.

It disturbs me that mental health is only discussed after a shooting.
I hope this is sarcasm, because the thing that never seems to be discussed around here after a shooting is mental health.

I just stumbled across this while reading a Wikipedia article on the incident at UCSB. Weird coincidence.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001_Isla_Vista_massacre

Was it one of my posts you found objectionable, Sanchez?
No, your posts have been pretty interesting. It was the whole rape culture debate that took the thread off topic a few posts back that I found objectionable and not entirely relevant.

Sorry to interrupt the discussion, but what happens this past Friday is absolutely devastating.

I have never thought that I would see two of my friends in body bags nor would there by a drive-by shooting right where I live.

Sure, out Isla Vista community is infamous for extravagant parties, but never anything like drive-by shootings.
I'm sorry to hear that this tragedy has affected your life. I'll be keeping you and your friends in my thoughts and prayers. I hope this type of evil never encroaches on the life of any member of this community ever again.

It's sure than NRA is blaming mentally ill people, it's easier to put the blame on someone else than accepting the blame.
Wait, I thought you were blaming MRAs earlier. Now it is the NRA? Make up your mind! Tongue.

No, I'm critizing NRA comment on mentally ill people. Through, here in Quebec, media are heavilly blaming the NRA and the Republican Party, as they do after every shooting (given than there is huge pro-gun control majorities in Quebec, it's a popular view).
My apologies, I completely misread your comment.

What I find most amazing is a European is stating that, as the ignorant American idiots who do seem to be completely unaware that people in other countries with far less gun violence watch plenty of violent movies and play violent video games too. But a non-American should know that.

But I mean hell, compare the level of violence in Japanese media to the level of violent crime in Japan.

So the most evil mass murderer in history, Anders Behring Breivik, is suddenly American and not Norwegian? News to me for sure!

If you don't know that his mind was totally f**cked up by a violent video game, then you're f**cked up yourself.

In Japan by the way, all guns are outlawed, so very strange there are no gun violence indeed! Get your facts straight before you open your mouth. That's the least you can do.
You know what is even more f**cked up then anything? The fact that Breivik will be out of prison in 20 years because of maximum sentences for his crimes. Too bad we savage American's punish those who slaughter in mass numbers instead of gently slapping Elliot Rodgers on the wrist. Maybe if we banned video games and took away our guns we'd be focus on rewarding bad behavior!

(I'm mostly kidding, but the attitude taken in Eric's post was nauseating)
