No, Labor Day at the first Monday in September provides a nice unofficial end to Summer before we get into Autumn with still Summer like weather in most of the country.  Also, it gives a nice day off for most people.
I agree with this, but if the true purpose of Labor Day is to be celebrated, it might as well be May 1st.
