We certainly would not have Obama, even if he was elected to the Senate in 04--Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Evan Bayh, Bill Richardson, Wesley Clark, maybe even Nancy Pelosi come to mind as potential candidates.

Either Hillary or Edwards would be the Dem Nominee. Bush would be republican nominee but would replace Chaney. Who would he have chose?

Bill Frist was Bush's number 2 pick in 2004, when Cheney offered to step down. Bush refused the offer and kept him on the ticket. Others could include Jeb Bush (not at all likely) George Allen, Condi Rice, Elizabeth Dole, and possibly Rick Perry.

I think Bill Frist, Rudy Giuliani, or Fred Thompson. No offense, but they other alternative running mates besides Cheney that you listed would all suck in the campaign.

None taken, they would suck on a campaign. But as the actual VP, Id judge them competant for the position.

Frist would have far too much baggage in 2006, Perry would negate the Texas electoral votes (so Bush would have to change his residency to DC or even CT). I think he'd go with Giuliani.
