But really, screwing up so bad you lose re-nomination, hated everywhere, and cede to the whims of one Congressman (Douglas).
Stephen Douglas was never our president. Buchanan was the president before Lincoln, Douglas was just one of the 2 democrat nominees in 1860.

Correct. 1856 was the only time someone elected President was ever denied renomination. Their party still won it. Of course conventional wisdom is that the party would have to lose if that happened.
