How does a place name just go unnoticed for centuries? Do the inhabitants call it something else?
Likely not, it's a place name, we may think it offensive, but these people have grown up there for generation, and that's just the name of the place.
It's no different than a person who say they come from Hell in Michigan. The name are a little less PC (today, 40 years ago it would have worse to live in a place called Hell), but honestly that's only a thing people have to come to care for the last 40 years.
Hell, MI or Intercourse, PA are just funny names, and are different than "Death to the Jews".
