I assure you that it is not common for a US Senator to go from unopposed to a near double digit loss in the course of a single term. Then again, given what he did.....

Out of the hundreds of Senators to run for re-election in the various elections in the post WWII era, you will find very few Lincolns, Santorums, and McGoverns. Pryor may not yet be Jacob Javits, but he's fast approaching the 1% of infamy. Just not the .1%.
