I don't know where you saw this apparent consensus that he was a "traditional union-busting Republican" (which I assume would be along the lines of Walker/Kasich/etc), but I don't think it was here. In my opinion, Christie is more or less a moderate Republican in the same way that Huntsman is seen as one. Fiscally conservative (but not extreme), realistic foreign policy views, socially moderate (civil unions, environment, drug war, etc), and has a desire to work with Democrats in order to help his state over helping his party.

Christie is always going knuckle-to-knuckle with the state teachers' unions, specifically. But what else is new? Every GOP New Jersey governor seems to run afoul of the NJEA at some point.

That was only barely true for Tom Kean and Don Difrancesco. Those types had no issue signing fiscal daggers that gave the NJEA lavish windfall finances while gutting the taxpayer in the back.

Christie knows of course that guns are for the liberal elites only. The people are supposed to get shot by the perps.

Sen. Edward Kennedy's private bodyguard, hired for a trip to South America, was arrested last week when he arrived at the Capitol with two submachine guns and ammunition, officials said Tuesday.


Stein was arrested by U.S. Capitol Police when he arrived at a Senate office building metal detector Jan. 7, just hours before Kennedy was to leave on his trip to South America.

Lt. Jeffrey Zanotti of the Capitol Police said Stein identified himself as Kennedy's bodyguard, told a guard he had weapons in his briefcase and asked where he could check them.

Police, however, confiscated the two submachine guns -- an Italian Beretta and an Israeli Uzi -- and 146 rounds of ammunition. They also detained Stein, charging him with possession of weapons without a license.

Uzi and Beretta submachine guns fire 9mm pistol ammunition. They have metal stocks that shorten the weapons to about 17 inches when folded, making them easy to conceal.

The Uzi, used by the U.S. Secret Service, was developed by the Israeli army.

The Washington Post quoted a source who said of the weapons, ''We're talking a small army.''

But Kennedy spokesman Robert Mann said, ''Chuck is a highly respected security person . . . not a Rambo type.''
