We're living in an age where facts do not matter. What matters is how a particular narrative makes people feel. It's basically the inverse of the groan-worthy "facts don't care about your feelings" trope--your feelings don't care about facts. This is true for both the average liberal and the average conservative; people are much more willing to believe something that feels true to them and reinforces their own narrative, so pretty soon it won't even matter if a politician or media figure is misrepresenting a story versus straight up fabricating it out of thin air. What will matter is if the voters like their story. I'm not immune to this either, but I'm baffled by how many people do not have the little voice in their head telling them that a particular story strains credulity even if it works for their own narrative. Maybe people just don't care.
