He was an authoritarian, not a populist.
I would not call those mutually exclusive.

Pat Buchanan is an example of an authoritarian populist.

I do consider Hitler a populist.  The key points of his popularity had a very populist flavor:
--xenophobia
--nationalism
--anti-establishment
