He's pretty unsavoury but I think there is a good chance that India's institutions are strong enough to prevent any crazy fascism.

Well, yes. India is almost unique in that it can elect blatantly extreme parties of one form or another (in fact of many, many forms) and retain its broadly democratic - well there's parliamentary government and contested elections at any rate - character.
