This is truly mortifying--such talented players and such a beautiful team sliding off the rails like this. However, like France in 2002 or Italy in 2010, there is precedent and there is hope for the future. But basic strategy will have to go back to the drawing board.

But I would agree with Del Bosque's analysis; Spain deserved to go out despite our efforts and the Dutch and Chileans were the better teams. Spain will need reforming of its play style (and yes, the end of tiki-taka, at least as we know it) and probably a lot of new blood, but I have confidence in the future.

Before this World Cup literally no one saw Costa Rica making it out alive, much less having a solid chance of winning the group. Truly this has been a fantastic Cup (despite the champions' elimination).
