Catholicism: Ornateness, (checkered) history
Orthodoxy: Even more ornateness, even more (and even more checkered) history
Anglicanism: Latitude, good writing
Lutheranism: Bad food, good music
Calvinism: Scholarship, severity
Congregationalism: Austerity, democracy
Methodism: Moderation, piety
LDS: Weirdness, conformism (but conformism to a weird standard)
Evangelicalism: Passion, philistinism
Pentecostalism: Poverty, zeal

I should point out here that just as Christians were first given our name at Antioch, Methodists were first given that name at Oxford, and were called such to mock their fanaticism relative to their more “moderate” peers.

Associating Methodism with hymns and the working class is entirely fair. The Wesley’s had a very odd coded language, and we are thus still discovering and translating some of Charles Wesley’s hymns to this day.

Were Methodists really viewed as fanatics back in the early years in England?

They were.
