The lenses are fine, it's the frames that broke. One of the temples came off and it's not easily fixable because the plastic warped.

I feel like I've been becoming a worse and worse poster over the years and I don't know what to do about it.

I had a potentially life/career-altering conversation with a professor at my school yesterday.

Care to elaborate, if you don't mind?

I was going to do my master's thesis on representations of Christianity in Japanese media, especially media created by and for non-Christians. Now I think I might instead do a comparative study of the discourse on the body in the second chapter of the Vimalakirti Sutra and the episode of Thomas putting his finger through the Risen Christ's hand in the Gospel of John. Obviously these ideas entail very different subfocuses within the field of comparative theology, and would probably lead me towards different doctoral programs.

I have kind of an understanding with this girl I like; she likes me too, but we're not 'together' (yet) because we want to see if our feelings will stay (or, since they'll inevitably cool and change since that's what feelings do, if we'll still want to commit to each other regardless then). I'm happy with the situation, although a little nervous about the future, especially if our feelings don't cool and change in the same direction or at the same time.

So are you guys going on dates and doing fun things together at least? Because sitting on your feelings and doing nothing will probably yield an end result of, well... nothing. Although you may not be officially together, I hope you'll both operate as if that's something you'd be exciting to work towards. Now's the time to have fun! Smiley

'Dates' no, fun things together yes.

I, too, was drunk last night. My floormate Giuliano mistakenly stole a bottle of prosecco from me and when he realized his mistake and gave it back we split what was left of it, which meant three glasses for me, and I'm a relative lightweight.

Unrelatedly, I'm very seriously considering formal conversion to Catholicism.

I must say, I'd really like to see how you're like when you're drunk. I can't begin to imagine it. Cheesy

Prone to mood swings, but only between giggly and weepy, never angry or 'wild'. Also flirty, apparently. But only with girls I already like.

I have to read eight chapters of Genesis, two of Exodus, one of Numbers, fifty pages of Understanding the Old Testament, Ambrose's sermon against Auxentius (notable for the charming use of 'worse than a Jew' as a term of opprobrium), and Jerome's letter to Eustochium, and I'm not really looking forward to any of it except Genesis.

The Biblical readings, about half of the Understanding the Old Testament reading, and parts of Jerome are done. I've decided I don't give a  about Ambrose right now. I did the reading for Spiritual Autobiographies days ago. Now I need to focus on submitting my first paper for Buddhism in America and rewriting my first paper for Intro to Christian Traditions. Then the first quiz for Intro to Hebrew Bible.

Also I'm growing disenchanted with certain aspects of trans/queer Discourse and I'm not sure what to do about this.

What specifically?

The language games with constantly shifting rules, partly. Mind you I'm really reluctant to be openly critical of this because most people who are openly critical of it are so as an excuse to be bigoted but it's getting exhausting to keep up with. Relatedly the idea that's developing that every conceivable facet of sexual predilection or gender expression can (or even has to) itself be an 'identity', and the ethos that the LGBT community ought to be 'inclusive' of everybody who is anything at all other than 'straight in a really narrow, specific way', rather than being a space for specific groups of people who have a specific shared history. Does that make sense?

I watched A Room with a View with my not-quite-girlfriend. A Room with a View has a reputation as an archetypal lesbian date movie, even though it's about straight people, and it definitely worked very well in this case.

I'm dyeing my hair black to go as Simone Weil to a Halloween party. It's the first time I've ever colored my hair.

Hah, yes. I can see that.

I probably should have contoured or something but I'm not good enough at makeup for that. In the end I just dyed my hair, dressed real shabby, and adopted this fixed archaic smile that (by design) got more pained and forced as the evening progressed.

I had to listen to this aging gay guy who is a relationship brag about this random guy he made out with and other aging people egging him on. Also, said random guy is/was in mourning for his mother.

What is "aging"?

Late fifties or so. The only reason I bring up his age is because bragging about this sort of thing is behavior that I generally associate with much younger people.
