In light of recent events in Atlasia and proposals by the Senate and the White House I hereby launch a petition to the federal government - a petition for more fiscal responsibility and budgetary discipline.

Atlasia is in a recession caused by the attempted dissolution of the Pacific Region. In order to battle the effects of this crisis and fight unemployment the Senate is debating a Stimulus Act, the costs of which would lead to a budget deficit of $400 billion in this year alone, adding to an already existing debt of around $13 trillion.

While I do not criticize the federal government for trying to find ways of stimulating the economy, I am vehemently opposed to recent bills such as the Basic Income Guarantee, both from an ideological and a fiscal point of view. In fact, the estimated basic costs of this program are $1.5 trillion - per year. According to the White House, taxes will have to be raised for the implementation of this program. Not only are the current federal tax rates already exceptionally high, but a tax hike at this juncture would be fatal for our economy.
Considering Senator TNF's derogatory remarks about wealthy Atlasians - he used the terms "parasites" and "parasitic offspring" to describe the process of inheritance - I am greatly concerned that even more radical proposals will receive serious consideration by the federal government.

In short, this petition is for all Atlasians who are worried about the direction this nation is taking when it comes to its financial and economic development. This is a petition for Atlasian citizens who want to urge the federal government to rethink its stances and take a more moderate and economically sustainable approach to the issues outlined above.

If you share these concerns, I encourage you to sign this petition. It is my goal to gather a substantial number of signatures, which will then be handed over to the White House and the Senate.

I thank everyone who has signed the petition or left a comment so far. It is important that issues like these get as much coverage as possible so many Atlasian citizens can make up their minds. Smiley

This has been a covered issue for well over a month. Federalists like Yankee, Sbane and TJ have been debating this with us and considering that there isn't anything close to a final bill yet, its probably pointless for people to "make up their minds" already. Most Senators haven't.

You are right, all of these issues have been covered by the Senate, but I suspect that there are many Atlasians who hardly ever look at the Senate debate threads. We should do more to inform a larger number of Atlasians about what's happening in regional Assemblies and the Senate, and such petitions are one way to do just that! Smiley

As I said, I am aware that the idea of a basic income guarantee has been mentioned before. But the debate in the Senate is taking place now and the public should know about it and get a fair chance to form an opinion on it. Looking at your and other people's comments in this thread I get the impression that it is somehow wrong to debate controversial Senate bills in public. Well, all I can say is that this is Atlasia, not North Korea. Smiley

I think the text of my petition is ok - after all I merely used figures from the President and the GM. I don't really discern any personal attacks either, unless you think it's a personal attack to mention the "parasite" quote by Senator TNF ... Smiley

I must have been thinking of your claim that this was a "$150 trillion "wealth distribution" utopia" then. Ah well. Seems like fear-mongering is your strategy of choice. Smiley

That was a typo for which I apologized yesterday in a different thread. I'm not sure if it's relevant here but now that you've mentioned it I can repeat it for everyone to read: In a post in the "Mideast Budget 2013" thread I wrote $150 trillion instead of $1.5 trillion after having misread the real figure. To get back to the real issue here, 12 signatures have been collected so far.

Ugh, I thought we were spending $150 trillion? Huh Sad

Yeah, $150 trillion would have been catchier. But what to do, we've got to work with what we have! Wink

To be fair, only 10 are office holders. All 8 signers of TNF's petition hold office.

I don't think that's relevant; all Atlasians are equal, and the main purpose of this petition is to give every Atlasian a chance to participate in political discourse. As Senator NCYankee stated, it is only positive if we try to find new ways to increase activity in the game. Smiley

Alright, I am going to close the petition later today. If there's anyone who still wishes to sign it, please do so asap.

A big thank you to everyone who has signed the petition! If you look at the four pages of this thread you can see that there were people who belittled it and ridiculed some of you who signed it. That's why I am all the more impressed that close to 30 Atlasians took their time to read and sign this petition. Smiley
