If a German Prime Minister went to a former concentration camp and gave a speech praising social darwinism?

Did I miss something? What prompted this question?

I was just thinking about Reagan going to Philadelphia, Mississippi (a town known only for the infamous murder of 3 civil rights workers) and giving a speech on "states rights".  Heck, old Ronny should have just said "Klansmen vote for me".

Hey, could you possibly stop telling lies Wakie?

Reagan actually kicked off his campaign at the Neshoba (sp?) County fair, where all the big politicos in Mississippi gather. Since he was running against Southerner Jimmy Carter, Reagan's campaign wanted to try and make inroads in the South, and this major event was well timed for an appearance.

So, yeah, he was in Philadelphia, MS. But it had nothing to do with getting the Klan vote, since that a) doesn't matter and b) would probably go to Carter anyway. Unless Reagan thought the election would come down to 100 votes in Mississippi, which, while at least theoretically possible, makes Wakie pretty stupid nonetheless for believing.

Goldwater, nice try to distort the facts.  But here they are, plain and simple.  He went to Philadelphia, MS while campaigning and chose to talk about (of all things) "state's rights".  It is no secret that talking up "state's rights" are (and were even more so in the 80s) a nice way to pander to racist elements of society.

He could have talked about foreign policy, the economy, the energy crisis, firearms, education, or any other number of things.  But instead he decided to send a clear message to bigots that they had a friend in Ronald Reagan.

Look Wakie, you were caught in a lie, get over it.

Unless you want to produce text of the speech.

Nice dodge of the reason he was there, by the way.

Where did I lie?  I said Reagan made a speech in Philadelphia, MS whose subject matter was "state's rights".  Are you denying that?

Philadelphia, MS is primarily known for the murder of 3 civil rights workers in the '60s.  Are you denying that?

"State's Rights" was often used as a nice way of talking about support of segregation.  Are you denying that?

As I said, I don't care WHY he was there .... he certainly had a right to campaign anywhere he wanted.  But the choice of topic for the speech was, at best, in extremely poor taste.  He could have discussed the economy, foreign policy, or any other number of topics.  But we see what he chose.

So ... tell me wherein I am lying ... otherwise we will have to brand you as being blatantly dishonest.

Yes, I'm denying the purpose of his speech was to insinuate he supports murdering civil rights workers, or even opposed civil rights in any way.

One thing that really seems to be eluding you is that rural Southern Democrats were going to vote for Carter anyway... Reagan won MS by 1.5% and he won nationally by over 9%. Just for example, look at Calhoun County:

Reagan- 42.8%
Bush '04- 64.7%

That county gave Goldwater 92% and Wallace 88%.

So, if showing up at the Neshoba County fair was such a clear "signal" or "message," apparently the voters didn't get it. So, yes, you are lying when you say that is the only thing Philadelphia, MS, is known for is the killing of civil rights workers. In MS politics, that is the last thing its known for.

What really happened is that professional liars, after the fact, realized the Neshoba fair was technically in Philadelphia's city limits, and then claimed Reagan spoke there to gain white votes. The reality of course is that this event was important politically to make connections with Southern politicians (mostly Democrats at the time, of course).

States rights was a topic, as it has been throughout US history. But by this time, Southerners had abandoned notions of resisting court orders, as evidenced by George Wallace endorsing Carter and then running for Governor again on a reconciliatory platform (in neighboring Alabama).

Anyone who claims Reagan chose the Neshoba fair to show some kind of solidarity with the Klan is a liar or a fool, period. Wakie has zero evidence... just the spittle passed along by his fellow socialists. He "knows" what a speech is about, though he's never read it. He "knows" what Philadelphia, MS is known for, though he's never been. A lot of knowledge for a fool.

No, that had nothing to do with it, since a) Reagan did nothing to the Civil Rights Act and b) the real reason the South became Republican was because of religion, which is easily provable statistically.

Sure, leftists have been lying for 20 years about Reagan (though actually I'm not sure when they figured this fairy tale out, I don't think it was right away). But that has no bearing on reality: not only was Reagan's speech not purely about states' rights, and not only was it an ideal campaign stop due to timing and the fair, but even so SEGREGATION WAS ALREADY OVER.

See that's the problem with people of limited mental capacity... it's irritating to argue with them because they can't keep 5 to 6 facts in their head at the same time. In this case, you need a decent number, so Wakie can't understand it.

I think he even lost sight of his own "argument," which was that Reagan went to Philadelphia as a racist statement. He was proven to be a liar but instead of just admitting his error, he tries to wiggle around the facts and ignore those inconvenient to his dishonesty.

Wakie, I'm sorry that you had to be disproven like that, I know you didn't make this story up yourself.

Just recite the basic facts and maybe you'll eventually get it:

- the South was Reagan's weakest region.

- Reagan had just been nominated and, when planning his campaign's schedule, the best fit for an important event was the Neshoba County fair.

- Reagan probably didn't even know he was going to Philadelphia until he got there (candidates don't plan their own events generally), and even then it's doubtful he recalled the killings many years prior.

So we can compromise and just say you're uninformed and gullible, as opposed to being a straight-up liar.
