Does it not set off alarm bells when people openly admit that it's a category set up to ban one particular poster?

There's an inherent unfairness in a rule that's, in fact, aimed at one person.  Indeed, that's grounds for grievances (and even lawsuits) when imposed in the workplace.  "This isn't the workplace!" isn't an argument that makes such rule-making any less unfair than it it is now.

I don't know about that. Rules evolve over time. It's likely that Dave thought that because Libertas pushed things so far, that a new rule was needed. It's also possible that Dave never intended to allow "excessive hyperbole" in the first place, but never created the moderation category because it was never that big of a deal beforehand.

The only reason anyone is saying this was about one person is because it was set up in reaction to that person, but it doesn't mean it was just for them. I'd give Dave far more credit than that...

It's absolutely fine to adjust the law to combat new threats. Fuzzy, think of it as an Atlas Forum "PATRIOT Act", meant to combat a type of terrorism not previously predicted or accounted for in the NatSec apparatus.

literally who cares about the imaginary-ass “right to secession”

State’s rights is a coward’s substitute for real politics.

I don't know, but Haley/Ryan should definitely be moderated for his use of the R-NC avatar, tricking me into reading his posts by making me think I'm about to enjoy another long-winded historical treatment by Yankee.

I've been having the exact same problem, and had considered voicing my concerns. You are far more polite than I would have been, so thank you.

Well you could just read his username.

That's not how any of this works.

Avatars is how we distinguish people here, and by using a R-NC avatar Haley/Ryan is deceiving us and casting mud on an esteemed member of the community.

So on what date did you advise Badger that his blue avatar was deceiving?

But it wasn't? For the longest time on this forum, Badger was R-OH and R-OH meant Badger. You didn't need to look at the username or anything else; it's just Badger.

The same goes for R-NC; R-NC means Yankee. Also O-MI means Cathcon, D-IN means Truman, O-UK means Al or Crabcake, S-MA means Nathan, D-KY means Santander, etc.

Someone gets it!

And Fuzzy, R-FL means you or Sanchez. Can easily be distinguished therefrom by the signature.

I’m so confused at the rage in this thread. Why would we tolerate posters calling for other posters’ executions?

EDIT: FTR, I think it’s fair to say that attempting to entirely disown Lenin as a perversion is only *one* way the left treated Lenin and the Soviet Union, and (a) whether Lenin was a “real Marxist”, and (b) whether Stalin’s Russia was a natural outgrowth of Lenin, are still up for debate.

My apologies, I'm bad with sarcasm -- but you're joking, right?

My answer to both you and the venerable Kwisatz Haderach, Voice from the Outer World Muad-Dib is that it legitimately does create confusion when a particular user and posting style are associated with a particular avatar, and then a second avatar of that same kind appears and there is nothing really distinguishing in the signature to tell them apart at first glance.

There are a few particular clusters where one is accustomed to having to glance at the username more closely--D-NY in particular--but a number of prominent posters may be one of only two representing that particular shape and color combo.
