A potential employer (who I was directed to by a mutual teacher of ours--said professor's recommendation being my apparent gateway to the job), told me a month ago that he planned to start hiring around mid-May. Is now, May 18th, an appropriate time to contact him again to, y'know, check in and see if there are still opportunities? Much help needed.

Absolutely.  Show interest.  If he's not hiring yet, he won't take offense.  You can't wait for him to come to you.

Thanks. I was afraid that it would seem inappropriate or too desperate.

Emailed the guy. Now scrolling through local government job listings. I'm gonna have to take tomorrow to sit down in a Starbucks (ugh) and hammer out about ten cover letters. Currently trying to write a readjusted version of my resume for more maintenance/manual labor jobs. 'Bout to leave to set up a savings account, however.

Memorize from the last line forwards; that's how my dad used to teach the memorization of piano music. People tend to start committing something to memory beginning to end, and end up very good at the first few lines or bars, but faltering repeatedly after that.

Goal of the Day: Apply for 4 jobs.
Status: 50% complete.

EDIT: I may be overcompensating, writing a cover letter for the position of seasonal laborer, but I don't care. If there's one thing I'm qualified for...
EDIT2: 200% complete.

Applied for far more than I expected to owing to the simplicity of some Oakland County applications.

In any case, a housemate and I went to the grand opening of Hopcat in Royal Oak this morning. We were lucky enough to be given cards granting us free "Crack Fries" for the next year. Quite the adventure. This is the fourth I've gone to, the others being Detroit, MI, Madison, WI, and Grand Rapids, MI. I hadn't even known there were multiple locations until I found out my cousin was a cook at the Madison location.

Using today's heavy rains as an excuse for both my avoidance of morning cardio and my lack of mass attendance. My energies shall instead be directed toward MOOC's and reading late 1970's books on sociology.

I have the opportunity, should the job be posted, to work for my school at some laborer position full-time. While hardly glamorous, it would pay enough and allow me to go to graduate school for at least 50% off. I could also drop the job at any point for greener pastures.

It's confirmed. My novel (the first volume to be precise) is to be published in July.

Woohoo!

Today marks four years since my dad died.  I feel like the ensuing depression kicked in all of the last two days.  I can barely think straight, my body temperature's been all over the place, and my muscles are so stiff I feel like I'm 90.

Great, now I'm crying.

Yesterday there were 12 years since my father died.

My dad would have been 60 today. Been over six years.

My computer has every appearance of being on its last legs, so it is taking me far longer than necessary to email myself attachments of every important paper and a few resume copied as a half-asses means of preserving them for posterity. I shall try to add them to my Googke Drive in the future.

I got a call to interview for a "recreation program leader" post at Oakland County Parks & Rec. Sounds like a summer job for the slightly more astute, and it pays ($10.30-$11.19) above my current wage ($10.25), so I left a voicemail saying I would like to interview. I've had 2 semesters' supervisory experience in a "recreation position" (and 4 semesters total), so I think I would have a good case to make. Hopefully the possibility of working there wouldn't interfere with my attempts to find a Real Person JobTM, which I am still seeking.

Haha, I'm a Detroit resident! Got my BA in May and I'm trying to scrounge up a job to get me through graduate school and two years in Detroit. I was supposed to have a $15/hour+ job, but my Guy's guy ain't coming through, so I'm looking at a wide range of options. If I'm very lucky, I could have a white collar position by September. In the middle range of options is me working for my school and this securing vastly reduced graduate tuition. Everything is still up in the air, though! Tongue

#hottake here, but both the conservative and the radical propose (ideally) a generally tame or harmonious world built upon violence. They will, of course, justify this by claiming said lack of violence allows other, more violent forces to prevail.

My computer has become barely functional. As I don't own a TV, this is troublesome, given its disruption of my occasional indulgence in entertainment (as well as the reduction in my EV calculator use).

In any case, before I attempted to watch television, I spent the day downtown and in midtown, including my inaugural ride on the Q-Line and my first visit to the biggest used bookstore in Michigan. Grabbed a book on pre-1861 Russia and one on the Soviet Union.

As an IT guy, I'm curious, what's it doing exactly?

Ribbon's been effed for a while, so the picture is shaky. What's causing me real pain is how painfully slow it is to operate, particularly with regards to Internet use. The browser will take forever to load even page changes, freeze up, and have to "unclog". This happens at such a rate that it is barely worth using.

Parks interview today. I'm leaving work after 10 to shower and head back to Oakland County. I once landed a parks gig (didn't take it) at a level or two below this while wearing a flannel shirt and blue jeans with work boots, so I'm not terribly concerned about my dress, but I'll still wear an uniformed shirt and my faded slacks. The fact that it's irregular hours kind of makes it slightly more appealing (though I wasn't particularly attracted to the job in the first place) simply because it would allow me to keep my current job in some capacity.

I got an unexpected opportunity today. One of the jobs I applied for called me. Apparently it's a temporary position as a laborer at an ANG base 36 minutes northeast of me. The woman asked me to accept now (before the official offer) and I told her I couldn't do that owing to my lack of details. I checked my online job applications, and there are two positions I was "referred" for that match that description. The one that is explicitly temporary posts a (relatively) very high pay, which is something I want to confirm. She has yet to email me information about a physical, but I plan to seek more info should that occur. Meanwhile, there are some new (white collar) slots up online I need to apply for.

Tried to call the recruiter back to confirm some details, but the number is either busy or doesn't work. Guess I'm stuck waiting in her email. I made sure to say I still wanted to see the official offer, so she better not have taken my reluctance/surprise the wrong way.
