Sticking with the Van Buren boys, but in the event of an Adams candidacy can we see Gerrit Smith as his VP?

I'm afraid that in order to secure someone's Vice Presidential nomination under a certain candidate, one must vote for the presidential candidate as well.

On another note:

Though the numbers don't exactly add up.
