Not a bad guy, but had too many racial issues, feelings for my liking. With that being said despite being an arch conservative he was generally a good contributer on issues other than race.
Some of the past comments he has made regarding race specifically blacks and Mexicans would lead you to believe otherwise, also someone obsessed that much with the Confederacy and thinking slavery wasn't that bad is generally not someone who sees other races as equals.
