The first major federal firearms law passed in the was the National Firearms Act of 1934. The Gun Control Act of 1968 was the next major federal legislation concerning firearms, and it was an issue in that fall's election dominated by "law and order" issues. The 1986 Firearm Owners Protection Act + the late 1980s crime/crack epidemic made guns a pretty big issue in the 1988 election as well. Since the passage of the AWB in 1994, the issue has been a mainstay.
