Nonetheless, I can think of better state capitals for a lot of states:

AL - Birmingham
AK - Anchorage
CA - San Francisco
FL - St. Petersburg or Gainesville
GA - Athens
IL - Chicago
KS - Lawrence
KY - Lexington
ME - Bangor
MS - Vicksburg or Natchez
MO - Columbia
OK - Tulsa
SD - Vermillion
WV - Morgantown

College town/state capital combos tend to be the best - Austin, Columbus, Madison, etc.
