Time to start courting Democrats to get to 218.

Charlie Dent for Speaker?

Just to point out, there's currently a resolution under consideration by the House that would require a secret ballot for the Speaker election...

If that were to pass it would be hilarious to watch how spectacularly the math didn't add up after every Speaker election haha

If they go to secret ballot, Pelosi ( or a moderate Dem), should pledge to abandon the Hastert rule if elected.

This currently seems more likely than a GOP'er securing 218 as anything other than a temporary Speaker.

A "caretaker" is no solution. This isn't preschool. GOP caucus would be better served resigning all their seats than admit they need a caretaker.

Seriously Wufric, regardless of the issues, how could you possibly trust these people with control of the nation? They can't work with themselves much less opposition, much less another nation. A Republican President would not be effective with this current atmosphere of Republican Congress.

In fact, I'd say a President Kasich for example would be far more likely to be impeached by a Republican Congress than a Democratic one.

Imagine what would happen if a Republican President of the United States actually resigned due to a 30-something-sized House GOP "Liberty" caucus effectively holding him and his party hostage.

Talk about theatrics, and, unfortunately, too much of a real possibility.

What would happen if Boehner struck a deal with Ryan to stay-on through the end of 2015 while completely disregarding the Hastert rule to do things like pass a budget, raise the debt ceiling and maybe even immigration reform with sensible Republicans and moderate Democrats?  That way, Ryan can come in as speaker in early 2016 without having to do any of the "dirty work" that the job typically requires, at least not for awhile anyway.
