Reagan saying openly racist stuff wouldn't have hurt him.  Heck, the racist stuff he said in real life was an asset to him.

What was one racist remark made by Reagan while in office or ever?
All right, it wasn't explicitly racist.  It was clearly coded.  He gave a speech where he talked about believing in "States' Rights" in Philadelphia, Mississippi, which was still notorious for having been the site where three civil rights workers were brutally murdered by the Klan.  Not to mention the story he made up about the welfare queen on the South Side of Chicago.  Right, he just happened to mention that.  He also opposed making MLK day a holiday.
So did MLK's family.
