Mississippi Redistricting Cases: the 1990s. The first legislative election in Mississippi in the 2000s was in 2003 so the state, or the courts had it been necessary, had more time to redraw the states legislative districts. Mississippi elected Legislators for what was supposed to be a four-year term in 1991 from districts drawn in 1982, but when a plan was enacted and approved by the Justice Department the next year, the U.S. District Court for Southern District of Mississippi federal ordered a legislative election for a three-year term on the regular primary and general election dates in 1992.
