If there were enough never-Trump electors to vote for someone else, they would still be Republicans and not voting for Clinton.  They could vote for another Republican and send it to the House, but even then the winner would be Trump or this other Republican.

So while Trump could conceivably lose to someone else, it won't be Clinton.

Electors who vote for someone other than who carried their state are adhering to the system.  That's why we have electors and not just points on a scoreboard.

Now whether we should have this system is another question.  Here's a simple diagram I have used to explain the electoral college:

DDD     RR  -------->  D wins!

DDD     R     R  ---->  R wins!
