I think 2 former senators will get some consideration:

Bill Frist
Dan Coats

I think Brownback is a strong darkhorse because he is well  liked by the christian base. 

I just don't think Thune will be helpful for any electoral votes.  Romney would pick him only if he felt secure to win Ohio and Florida, and Virginia.
