Just post-war elections, without hindsight (the '76 one in particular I would come to regret later on, but I think in the context of the campaign and the Ford Presidency that is the vote I would have cast):
1948: Harry Truman
1952: Dwight Eisenhower
1956: Adlai Stevenson
1960: John F. Kennedy
1964: Barry Goldwater
1968: Richard Nixon
1972: Richard Nixon
1976: Jimmy Carter
1980: Ronald Reagan
1984: Ronald Reagan
1988: George Bush
1992: George Bush
1996: Bob Dole
2000: George Bush
2004: George Bush
2008: John McCain
2012: Mitt Romney
With hindsight, probably for Nixon over Kennedy in '60 and either Libertarian or Ford outright in '76. Ford was definitely the lesser of two evils in that election.
Why the switch to Adlai Stevenson in 1956?
I would've been pretty upset by Eisenhower's policy of support for Nasser during the Suez Crisis. A US-backed UN resolution was introduced on October 30 calling for Israel to withdraw from the Sinai Peninsula. The election was held a week later, on November 6. Under such circumstances I would probably have voted against the incumbent administration almost regardless of who the opponent was (and Stevenson was by no means a bad guy).
America's actions during the Suez Crisis were one of the greatest foreign policy blunders this country committed during the 20th century, in my view.
