Now that I actually think about it, this trip has been really successful if you just forget about everything that happened in Britain. Which most Americans seem to be doing.

How has it been successful? What has Romney accomplished exactly?

Looked statesmanlike, met with famous people, got some nice photos.

England turned out bad because of a rabid and liberal British press.

Hahah what? If anything, the conservative papers were even more critical of him than the left-wing ones!

England turned out bad because he said stupid s**t. And it makes perfect sense in the context of British politics than the Right would be more critical than Left.

Uh no he didn't, he looked like a moron...and a wimp (according to the far-left European socialist magazine Newsweek)...

I said excluding Britain.

Considering Walesa's background, him endorsing Mitten's so enthusiastically is quite a surprise. I guess foreign policy trumps all in some cases.

Who was it that said Mitt would go and insult unions? This is surprisng indeed.

Walesa, like most former anti-Eastern Bloc activists (or people for whom the Eastern Bloc is still a rather vivid memory, such as my family), is fairly supportive of the American Republicans.

Powellites?

Wikipedia says powellite is a calcium molybdate mineral with the formula CaMoO4, and I don't know what you mean off the top of my head. Because of their stance against universal healthcare, the American Right is generally not looked upon favorably in Britain (alas! in a reasonable world it would be the other way around), so the British Right may have seized on an opportunity to distance themselves from the likes of Romney and the Republicans.

mondale, by that token, no diplomatic trip is ever a success. Concrete accomplishments? None. It's about soft power: Romney had a huge crowd in Poland and got the endorsement of an iconic former president.

You mean like 500 people (all right-wing wackos probably)?

Because anybody who could possibly support the Republicans is a right-wing wacko.

There's barely such a thing as small-c conservatives in Britain.

LOL. You do realize that the Tories are the original conservatives, right?

What counts as a conservative in America and what counts as a conservative in Britain are two different things.

Britain is one of the most small-c countries in the world. Tongue

It's why we still have things like the House of Lords, Monarchy and a FPTP electoral system.

No, that's just plain old inertia.

What do you think 'for example' in that sort of context means, exactly? If you must know, then it is not especially hard to find noxious homophobic content in (for example) the pages of the Daily Mail, or attitudes towards women that are less than entirely in keeping with feminism in The Sun.

I really don't know enough about British journalism to interfere in your debate with Hagrid, but I want to note that attitudes less than entirely in keeping with certain sects of feminism can be found literally anywhere.
