Maps like this happen when

a) Ike Skelton and Pat Danner win in landslides
b) Harold Volkmer and Kenny Hulshof have a close race
c) Jo Ann Emerson is forced to run as an independent because her husband died in the middle of the campaign and the token opponent for the Republican nomination refused to withdraw, forcing Emerson to run as an Independent

That's the US House results map for 1996

Ah, I remember wondering about that.

The 1998 Almanac of American Politics tells the story this way

Kline got 22% (1653 votes) in Crawford County, presumably from people who just voted straight ticket. He also got 18% in heavily Republican Wright County.

Emerson won 50/38 in a district that Clinton carried 45/43

The "Alan Schlesinger rule" could be called the "Richard Kline rule".

In other words, if you run as a Republican against an independent Republican and a Democrat, you're assured of at least 10%

House results for North Carolina

With the results from split counties combined by party:

Remembering that Butterfield didn't have any opposition (and any 100% counties were given the >90% coloring).

Overall

Democrats: 53%, 7 seats
Republicans: 47%, 6 seats

Trent isn't even from Hancock County, yet he ran 12 points ahead of Ford there.

The Constitution Party candidate recieved over 20% in Millard and Sanpete Counties. And that guy recieved more votes than the Democrat in those counties.

The Kansas Map (with split counties being combined by party)

Overall:
Republicans - 449548 (54%, 2 seats)
Democrats - 360356 (44%, 2 seats)
Reform - 16213 (2%)

Didn't think that Boyda won so many little counties, did you?

(Also, guess where John Doll's house is! Doll being the KS-01 candidate who got blown out by Moran.)

Not quite.

Boyda won by 7631 votes overall, she won by 7029 votes in Shawnee County.

Other than Shawnee County, she won by 602 votes.

Ryun does win 50/48 without Shawnee and Douglas Counties.

But still, putting up 48% outside of Topeka and Lawrence is pretty impressive.

The Kentucky U.S. House Results Map.

Republicans - 611780 (49%)

Chandler defeated a Libertarian by an 87/13 margin, explaining the dark spot on the map.

Hal Rogers also got a big win, but Stepp came close in a few counties.

Barlow won a few traditionally Democratic counties too.
