I don't know, I have no reason to not believe you. Sounded like a large number, I don't remember that many coming out publicly before.
I was guessing; I knew that we had at least several thousand of them.
This 2006 Slate article cites an estimate of 4,700 living retired generals. If we assume that today's number is about the same (I'd be willing to bet that it's higher), 300 generals would be just over 6% of the total.
