Wow, I didn't expected Stevenson winning Leominster/Fitchburg if I'm reading the 1952 map correctly. From what I've occurred it's seem like a conservative Democrat districts.

Actually, that was his appeal.

Look at this map (courtesy of homelycooking)

Reagan won both of those despite winning by a lesser margin. Blackstone, MA voted for John Davis when literally no other town in Massachusetts did, yet gave Reagan 55% of the vote. (The first time it ever voted Republican for President, I believe.)

I meant more of a blue collar conservative district, since Stevenson was the anti blue collar Democrat that are the base in two cities. Blackstone is the same if they voted for Reagan, which means that they are more Democratic then liberal.

Stevenson campaigned as something of a bog-standard New Dealer though, which was sufficient to keep them in the fold.

Wait... the Democratic-Republican party still existed in New Hampshire?

(I'm guessing it's something else but still...)

Races where a candidate was listed as both a Republican and Democrat - most were unopposed. Incidentally, one such candidate was in Rumney, mark of a true moderate hero. Smiley

There was only one instance of this in Massachusetts (I neglected to put that in earlier.)

Anyway, I'd just like to comment on my shock that Hartford and Bridgeport elected Republican State Representatives by such large margins.

According to this he was a Republican legislator. Doesn't seem to be especially noteworthy though.

The above map is the 1915 Lieutenant Governor primary. Not sure if this is regionalism or ideological; any Progressive candidate worth their salt a few years back would do quite well in Plymouth/Cape Cod.

Leahy's first election?

Interesting how Brattleboro and its immediate environs were not yet Democratic yet even though the rest of that stretch of the Connecticut was.

Indeed. Sanders did quite well, but ) Brattleboro was almost majority Mallary (49.81%.) Windham used to be one of the more Republican counties in VT and I imagine exhibited a similar pattern (though I lack the data.)

The adjacent election is the infamous Wyman versus Durkin race that ended in a two vote victory for Wyman.

Reading his wikipedia page, I can see why you'd like Martin.

Though it does seem he went a bit to the left in the fifties, though apparently not enough for Heckler (although it does seem strange that in the primary, his support came from the South end of his district which in the general was more Democratic).

Heckler challenged Martin from the right, and used a phrase that Martin used when he primary challenged the incumbent Republican in 1924 (who was in his eighties, I believe.)

Martin was always a "favorite son" of Attleboro and was loved in rural Bristol (he hailed from North Attleboro.) He only lost a rural Bristol area once; Berkley, and that was against Cole who resided in neighboring Taunton. As for winning Fall River, well, there were never many Republicans in Fall River. Wink

Which is interesting...

How'd she do it and what were the themes of the campaign, etc.?

Basically that Martin was a washed up hack past his prime. His fall from grace from the leadership in '58 and a nobody drawing ~25% in the previous primary showed that there was blood in the water.

And of course, she used this quote:

"I am sure this is not a time for sentiment but the time to put on guard the men best capable of rendering efficient service. Too much is at stake otherwise."

Dallas, having looked at a couple pages of this thread, I'm wondering, how many websites did you visit, how many maps did you pour over, and how many strange visits/phone calls did you make to local and state government buildings for all this stuff?

It looks like he got most of his data from the Register and Manual from various years in MA's archives.

There are books of that stuff? Those'd be useful.

Indeed! Though in the near future I may make a call to the Vermont SOS and see if I can get/purchase some data earlier than I already have.

Lots of ticket splitting going on in New Hampshire, especially in Rockingham.

You are a godsend!

However, I'm having a problem opening the PDF's. I get a message that reads "There was a problem reading this document (9)." Followed by "This file contains information not understood by the viewer. Supress further errors?"

EDIT: After a great deal of tinkering I think I've fixed the problem. Merci beaucoup.

I'm kinda surprised Cox won any towns in Vt.

Likewise. Especially considering that he got walloped (almost 2-1) in Burlington.

However, one pattern I did notice about MA (and I suspect it's similar in VT too) was that despite overwhelming wins, there were some small-town D enclaves. For instance, in that 1920 map Harding only lost two towns: Milford and Blackstone.

I believe I have the 1916 results as well for VT (which was only 61% Republican) so that might give a more clear picture about where Democratic strength (if there was any to speak of) was.

VT Data Smiley Smiley Smiley

I've got a lot of Rhode Island's elections, 1950-present done, if you'd like any, let me know!

Rhode Island has the best previous elections website ever.

I don't know about that! Mass's website used to link to archive.org's logs of MA elections going back to 1900 or so. Wink

That being said, I've done several New England composites over the years and I would be appreciative if you could tack on Rhode Island where appropriate Smiley (for instance, I updated 1964 on my laptop and forgot to use the version that had Rhode Island included.)

I’ve been curious to see 1992 – for all of lower New England – could you do it by town here??

Did Perot win any towns in MA, CT and/or RI?? It seems to me that the places in New England where Perot did best were the ones which swung most to Trump in 2016.

1972 is another one I have been after. Did McGovern win even any precinct in New Hampshire that election?

Off the top of my head, I don't recall Perot winning any communities in lower New England - obviously he won some in Maine.

If homelycooking hasn't done it yet (I would assume he has) I can definitely do a 1972 map of New England; I should have data for Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts.

Now that I've addressed that, I'd like to mention that I had a bit of a hiatus for a few years, but stumbled upon a hardcover copy of election data I had and have gotten back into doing this sort of thing. I've been filling out the Vermont page last night and this morning.

Apologies for any unanswered questions from years past in this thread, but I can take on some requests - provided I have the data.
