Another reason why polls in Austria and Germany close at 5/6 pm is that the results are made "prime-time ready": Between 5 and 9, when the polls are closing and the votes are mostly counted, most people are watching and also watching the post-poll closing debates and analysis.
If the polls would close at 9pm and vote counting takes until midnight, many people would just go to bed instead of watching the results, debates and analysis stuff.
Plus: Yeah, SC - 7 parties would be a new record.
Meanwhile in the UK the polls close at 10pm local time and the whole countries stays up until 3am to see who won!
