A lot are quite secular, educated, but reasonably well off.  Yankees were very much moderate Republicans and you still see them winning at state level in New England.  Also most mainline Protestants, very few Evangelicals which is where GOP strength is now.  And likewise percentage with college degree higher than general public which helps too.
