I'm now the longest-serving Cabinet member in Atlasian history - this is my 1,059th day in office as SoFE. I've been responsible for the administration of every federal election since December 2011.

It's a bit arrogant of me to be pointing this out when I've made so many mistakes and errors of judgment and have been in something of a stubborn, prickly mood of late, but I did want to thank all of you for the confidence you have shown in me and my office. I have often disappointed and on one or two occasions probably deserved to be dismissed, but I hope that my failures have demonstrated a tendency to be lazy and careless rather than venal and vindictive. I enjoy the job, and while I certainly can't imagine that I'll make it to 2,000 days as SoFE, I appreciate the opportunity to have served for so long. In practice that language is intended to provide for a range of possible times during which a voting booth can be opened. The general custom, one that I've adhered to now for well over three years, is for the election to begin as close to 0:00 on Friday as possible (while still beginning on Thursday), so that the 72-hour election period encompasses as much of the weekend as possible.

I'll be posting the voting booth thread for this weekend's special election momentarily. The booth does not open until 12:00 EST, Atlas default time (1:00 EDT), so take note: if you cast your vote before 12:00 EST, Atlas default time (1:00 EDT), it will not be counted.

In other words, there's no need to try to be the first person to cast your ballot. You have 72 hours in which to vote.

The cruel destruction of two of our beloved friends and colleagues thrusts upon our consciences the urgent need to celebrate their lives while we can still vividly remember who they were and what they did. In doing so, we must offer solace to those for whom their loss is felt acutely, but we must not mourn, for Michael Denvir and Andrea Roccanello were not innocents. Their deaths were not unthinkable or incomprehensible. They were partisans of democracy, committed to ideals which marked them as enemies and targets. Though they may not have expected to part from us in that time and in that place, they were prepared to make this sacrifice so that the right of Atlasians to govern themselves might be preserved, enriched and bequeathed.

May we too be so prepared. May we strive to combat the terror and ignorance that afflicts our society with the fortitude of our departed fellow citizens. By their blood, in their names, the democratic sacrament is renewed.

Why was my write in for kaljew not counted?

The last time I had checked the Candidacy Declaration thread, I'm certain that Kalwejt had posted something like "On second thought, never mind" about accepting write-in votes. He must have deleted it. Surely I'm not losing my mind...!

I'm really sorry, but I can't constantly be checking that thread to see whether or not people delete their posts. The last notification from Kalwejt that I saw in the Candidate Declaration thread indicated that he was no longer interested in accepting write-in votes. He should not have deleted that post - and he could have simply written himself in if he wanted to change his mind again and accept them.

I will be unavailable to open the voting booth for the April Federal Election on Friday, so DSoFE Talleyrand will do that in my place. I'll be back midway through the election and will count and certify the results as usual.
