For example, James L. Buckley, a Conservative Party New York senator in the 1970s.
Currently, Ron Johnson I suppose.

Edward Brooke [MA] - First elected black senator of one of the whitest states in the country.

That's like saying the the Sununus are such a very fit for NH.

Larry Pressler of South Dakota; liberal Republican in a not-so-liberal state.

And my personal favorite: Glen Taylor, firebrand progressive and Henry Wallace’s 1948 running mate was senator of Idaho

Idaho was a progressive leaning state until the 1930s. It started to change in the 1940s (FDR won it by little in 1944, Truman won it in 1948 by little despite being a better fit, and the rest you know), but it wasn't Maine or Kansas.

Maybe,
but I don´t think a latino republican is a bad fit for TX.

Alfonse D'Amato comes to mind. He primaried a much more liberal Republican and 2 of his 3 victories were very close.

Surely Javits was a better fit, but D'Amato wasn't that bad, specially for a NY republican in the 1980s.
