I definitely consider myself an American nationalist and prefer that term over that of "patriot" since it affirms the existence of an American nation separate from various nations that came to our shores. For that reason, I have a strong affinity for our national symbols and songs although at the same time I'm disgusted by its appropriation by certain reactionary political factions. Any vibrant American liberalism must seize and claim for its own the national tradition of the Untied States of America.

I also strongly identify with my home state of California and admire its rich landscape, history, and culture. Same with Orange County-the unfair and vicious caricature of mein heimatland as still some bastion of philistine and reactionary Bircherites living in endless miles of tract housing that was barely accurate even 50 years ago on this forum and elsewhere has made me particularly defensive for her honour. I do like my city but identity in Orange County is definitely more directed towards the county rather than city level IMO. Ditto with my neighbourhood which admittedly is rather unremarkable.
