He may very well have been chosen in 2008, should Hilllary have won the Democratic primary.

Since he decided to vote to the right of some GOP Senators after being turned down for the VP spot, screwed the Indiana Democratic Party in 2010 by announcing his retirement the day signatures were due, wrote a blistering op-ed in the NY Times, joined Fox News as the token Democrat, and decided to make a sh!tload of money as a lobbyist (instead of affecting policy otherwise, like he said he would), I'm guessing his chances of being tapped as VP are slightly smaller now.
