I don't even think the backlash was to the Floyd protests themselves so much as it was to their policy consequences.
It turns out that when policymakers discourage policing in black communities (which was an effect of post-Floyd criminal justice programs even when it wasn't intended), a lot more black people are victimized by criminals or maimed in preventable car crashes.
Anyway, there's a lot about these protests that are different from the summer of 2020, but if we look at these events as having something to do with the procession of the seasons, we're just getting started.
The end of the semester probably means that campuses themselves will cool down. But what about all of those students, who now have experience organizing these events, and who may not have many other responsibilities over the summer, who will be going home to their neighborhoods?
