Your guess is as good as mine. Wisconsin either votes for really good Democrats or really bad Republicans. There is no in between.

Wisconsin likes bold ideologues. Voters here view moderates and machine hacks as corrupt and disingenuous.

They may be on to something but Feingold is pretty progressive IIRC

Yep, and one of the few who took a stand against the Middle Eastern war. It's still shocking to me that he lost.

Betraying the principle he was most associated with for easy donations certainly didn't help him.
